Du chant grégorien à l’École de Notre-Dame

La naissance et le déploiement de la polyphonie à Paris aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles.

Alors qu’en 1163, l’évêque Maurice de Sully initiait la construction de l’actuelle cathédrale Notre-Dame, les chantres parisiens inventaient une nouvelle polyphonie. Ainsi, le « Magnus liber organi », le grand livre des organum était destiné à « enrichir ou accroître, le service divin » à la dimension du nouvel édifice. Conçu à partir du chant grégorien, et en alternance avec lui, il sera aussi à l’origine du développement de nombreuses autres compositions polyphoniques.

Nous serons ainsi amenés à parcourir quelques siècles d’histoire, entrer dans la profondeur et la richesse du chant grégorien, et assister, participer, à la naissance et aux développements de la polyphonie du XIe au XIIIe siècle. Nous apprendrons, en chœur et en soliste, à lire et à chanter sur les manuscrits du moyen âge, depuis les premières notations neumatiques au Xe siècle, jusqu’aux manuscrits parisiens du XIIIe siècle, en particulier le fameux manuscrit de Florence (Pluteus 29.1). Nous nous plongerons ainsi dans la richesse musicale, poétique et rhétorique du Paris médiéval.

The Carmina Burana song-collection is widely known through Carl Orff’s famous cantata and through the sound-world recreated by ‘historically informed’ performers since the 1960s. At its core lies a thirteenth-century manuscript, the Codex Buranus, preserving a large collection of Latin and vernacular poems with musical notation. Celebrated for its lyrical, satirical, and dramatic texts, this manuscript is a key witness to medieval song culture.

The SNSF-funded Carmina Burana Online project (based at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis) is preparing a comprehensive study and digital edition of its texts and musical notation. The questions, challenges, and new insights emerging from it – both scholarly and performative – will be explored in this conference. We will consider the Carmina Burana both from within its historical and cultural context and as a modern object of study.

Central themes include the different types of poetic and musical compositions it contains; their notation; strategies of analyzing and editing them, and the specific challenges associated with creating online editions in the context of digital humanities. Combining scholarly analysis and performance practice, the conference opens new perspectives for reviving the Codex Buranus in sound. It incorporates three especially commissioned concerts, focusing on Latin songs, German songs and the Passion Play respectively. These feature students and teachers of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, as well as invited performers. All showcase the results of taking knowledge-based practical exploration and experimentation as a point of departure.

In Paradisum - Basler Madrigalisten

Maurice Duruflés Requiem ist ein Werk von berührender Schönheit. Es verzichtet bewusst auf das dramatische Dies irae. Anstelle von Angst und Höllenszenarien spendet es Trost, Licht und Hoffnung. In einer kommentierten Kostprobe geben die Basler Madrigalisten Einblick in ihre musikalische Auseinandersetzung mit diesem berühmten Werk, das sie am 2. November 2025 unter dem Titel «In Paradisum» in Mariastein aufführen werden. Gemeinsam mit Magdalena Högg, Fachärztin für Palliativmedizin, beleuchten wir die Themen Sterben, Abschied und Begleitung – und welche Rolle Musik dabei einnehmen kann.
